The practice of footprinting (also known as reconnaissance) is being used to obtain information about computer systems and the entities to which they connect.

Information gathering is used to collect data to make use of and benefit from resources.

There are 2 types of footprinting: Passive and Active.

Passive Footprinting: Reading a company’s website or researching them to see what information is accessible about them could be considered passive footprinting.

Active Footprinting: Sending a phishing email to an employee in the hopes of obtaining proprietary information is an example of active footprinting.
